There may never again be another six-interception game that features such thrilling quarterback play as Thursday night's tilt between Southridge and Sunnyside.
The Suns rallied from 12 points down, pitching a shutout in the second half and going ahead on Chris Haueter's twisting 5-yard touchdown run -- and Conner Mertens' clutch extra point -- for a 20-19 win over a feisty Grizzlies bunch at Lampson Stadium.
"We remembered two weeks ago in Wenatchee. They were down at the half, and they came out and beat us by one point," said Haueter, who finished with 200 total yards. "We said, 'We have to do this.' "
What the Suns had to do to win the CBBN 3A opener for both teams was shake off some of their aggressive tendencies to keep tabs on slippery Sunnyside QB Eduardo Salmeron. He torched Southridge for 99 yards and two scores on nine carries in the first half -- two of those truly electrifying plays -- as the visitors opened a 19-7 edge.
"The kid is athletic," said Haueter, who also plays linebacker and spent much of the night chasing Salmeron. "I high jump with him in track season, and he's good. I'm impressed."
More impressive was that Sunnyside lost running back Steven Monterrey, who accounts for two-thirds of its offense, to a knee injury on the Grizzlies' first offensive play.
